The name is confusing - we know. A heat pump looks like an air conditioner, and in the summer it acts just like one too. When cooling your home, a heat pump compresses refrigerant, and sends that refrigerant back inside to the indoor coil system (a series of copper tubing contained inside an air handler or evaporator coil). The fan motor in the furnace or air handler pulls warm air from the home, and pushes it through the chilled indoor coil. This cools and dehumidifies the air.
In the Winter a heat pump basically reverses the cooling process. Even when air outside is cold there is heat energy in it. An air source heat pump extracts this heat energy, and uses it to heat refrigerant. The heated refrigerant is sent inside to the coil, and home air is warmed as it is forced through the coil by the fan motor.
